📚 Understanding International Age and Korean Age

International age starts at 0 at birth and increases by one year on each birthday. This is the global standard for age calculation. Korean age (counting age), on the other hand, starts at 1 at birth and adds one year to everyone on January 1st each year.

Since June 28, 2023, South Korea has implemented the Age Unification Act, officially using international age for all legal and administrative purposes. However, some laws use different standards as exceptions—school enrollment is based on birth year (January to December), and military service uses calendar age (current year minus birth year).

Calendar age is calculated by subtracting the birth year from the current year, regardless of whether the birthday has passed. People born in the same year share the same calendar age. This standard is used for school enrollment, military service, and voting eligibility. For example, someone born December 31, 2000 and someone born January 1, 2000 share the same calendar age, but their international ages can differ by nearly a full year.

🇰🇷 The Korean Age System: A Historical Deep Dive

Korea was long the only country in the world that simultaneously used three different age systems. Before the Age Unification Act took effect on June 28, 2023, Koreans had to switch between three types of age depending on the context.

1. International age (만 나이): Starts at 0 at birth, adds 1 on each birthday. Since June 28, 2023, this is the official legal and administrative standard.
2. Counting age (세는 나이 / Korean age): Starts at 1 at birth, and everyone in the country adds 1 year on January 1st. Still widely used in everyday conversation.
3. Calendar age (연 나이): Current year minus birth year. Birthday irrelevant. Used in specific laws such as school enrollment and military service.

For example, a baby born on December 31 would be 2 years old in counting age by the very next day, January 1. Meanwhile, a baby born on January 1 of the same year would still be 1 year old. In extreme cases, this created situations where a newborn was 0 in international age but 2 in counting age.

Even after the unification law, answering the question "How old are you?" with counting age remains common in casual conversation, especially among older generations. International age is strictly applied only in official documents, hospitals, and legal contexts.

🌍 How Different Countries Calculate Age

  • Korea (Counting Age): Start at 1 at birth, add 1 every January 1. Still widely used in daily life even after its legal abolition in 2023. A uniquely Korean traditional age system.
  • Japan (数え年 / Kazoedoshi): Similar to the Korean counting age system. Since the Meiji era, Japan officially uses international age (満年齢), but 数え年 is still used in shrine visits and traditional ceremonies.
  • China (虚岁 / Xū Suì): Start at 1 at birth (虚岁), add 1 at Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year). Modern China officially uses international age (周岁), but 虚岁 persists in rural areas and among the elderly.
  • Western Countries (International Age): Start at 0 at birth, add 1 on each birthday. The international standard used as the legal and official basis in the majority of countries worldwide.
  • Vietnam (Tuổi Mụ): Similar to Chinese 虚岁. Start at 1 at birth, add 1 at Tết (Lunar New Year). Still mixed with international age in daily conversation in modern Vietnam.

🐉 Zodiac Signs and Age: East Meets West

In Korea, it is common to ask "What is your zodiac animal?" (무슨 띠예요?) instead of directly asking someone's age. The 12 Chinese zodiac animals cycle every 12 years and serve as a way to estimate someone's approximate age.

The 12 animals in order: Rat → Ox → Tiger → Rabbit → Dragon → Snake → Horse → Goat → Monkey → Rooster → Dog → Pig

For example, those born in 2000 are Dragon year, and those born in 2001 are Snake year. If someone shares the same zodiac sign, they differ by 12 years (or 24, 36 years, etc.). In both Korea and China, birth rates notably increase during Year of the Dragon, as the dragon is considered the most auspicious of the 12 animals.

In the West, the 12 Western zodiac signs (astrology) are based on the month and day of birth—Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20–May 20), and so on. Among younger Koreans, Western horoscopes have become popular alongside traditional zodiac animals. By entering your date of birth in this age calculator, you can also determine your zodiac animal and Western sign.

🎂 Milestone Ages in Korean Culture

  • Dol (Age 1): The dol-janchi (first birthday party) is a grand Korean celebration. The dol-jabi ceremony, where the baby chooses from items like thread, money, a brush, or rice, is believed to predict the child's future.
  • Age 18: Voting age in South Korea. Lowered from 19 to 18 in 2019 by amending the Public Official Election Act. Citizens can vote in local, presidential, and National Assembly elections.
  • Age 19: Legal adult age in South Korea. Legally permitted to drink alcohol, smoke, and access adult content. Full legal capacity for contracts and financial transactions.
  • Hwangap (Age 60): The 60th birthday marks the completion of the 60-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac (干支). Traditionally celebrated with a grand feast, where children present significant gifts to their parents.
  • Age 65: Senior benefit age in South Korea. Eligible for free subway rides, discounts at national/public facilities, and Basic Pension benefits (subject to income requirements).
  • Chilsun (Age 70): Also known as gohui (古稀), derived from the phrase 'Since ancient times, it has been rare to live to seventy.' Like hwangap, the family gathers for a festive celebration.

⚖️ Legal Age Requirements in South Korea

Various South Korean laws define age requirements, and the applicable age system (international age vs. calendar age) may differ by law.

Driver's license: Age 18+ (Class 1 standard requires age 19+). Enrollment at a driving academy is possible before turning 18, but the license itself can only be obtained after reaching age 18.

Drinking & smoking: Age 19+. ID checks at convenience stores and restaurants use international age. Under the Juvenile Protection Act, selling alcohol or tobacco to minors under 19 results in penalties for the vendor.

Military service: Obligation begins at age 18; enlistment occurs between ages 19–28. The Military Service Act uses calendar age (current year minus birth year). Enlistment age ranges may be adjusted, so check the Military Manpower Administration for current details.

Marriage: Age 18+ (following the 2024 Civil Code amendment). The minimum age for marriage without parental consent was unified to 18 for both men and women, replacing the previous standard of 18 for men and 16 for women.

Voting rights: Age 18+. Voters must have reached age 18 by election day to be eligible to vote.

🧮 How This Calculator Works

This age calculator precisely computes your age based on your date of birth and today's date. Rather than simply subtracting years, it considers months and days for an accurate international age.

Calculation process: First, the birth year is subtracted from the current year. If the current month/day is before the birth month/day, 1 is subtracted to reflect that the birthday has not yet passed. This method provides your precise international age in years, months, and days as of today.

Leap year handling: For those born on February 29, age is calculated using March 1 as the reference in non-leap years. This calculator accurately reflects the Gregorian leap year rules (leap year every 4 years, except every 100 years, but again every 400 years).

Days lived are calculated by computing the total milliseconds from the date of birth to today, then converting to days. Total weeks are derived by dividing by 7, and total hours by multiplying days by 24.
